Thierno Barry's goal gave Everton a 1-0 win at St James' Park and condemned Newcastle United to a fourth defeat in five matches across all competitions, sending them down to 13th in the Premier League. No side in the division has lost more home games in 2026 than Newcastle, who have now been beaten seven times on their own turf this year. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 consecutive home matches, the longest such run in their league history. Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher described Matthias Jaissle's side as flat and boring. A total collapse. The German, appointed in August as Eddie Howe's successor, saw his tactics fall apart on Monday Night Football, with Newcastle failing to register a shot on target until the 85th minute and drawing boos from their own supporters.

Jaissle admitted afterwards that his side had not carried out the plan. "Unfortunately we couldn't deliver our style of play across the whole 90 minutes," he said, before pointing to a lack of courage on the ball. "We were not brave enough in possession. Too many long balls." Nor did he begrudge the reaction from the stands. "After a performance like that, I can understand that," the manager acknowledged. With three wins from nine games, Newcastle sit just four points above the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's trip to Fulham.
