Major League Soccer is making an unprecedented decision in American sports history — the 2026 season will pause for seven weeks to make way for the World Cup, which will be held on American soil for the first time since 1994. From May 25 to July 16, not a single MLS match will be played — this is the longest break in the league's 31-season history.
For comparison: during the 2018 World Cup, MLS only paused for 9 days. In 2014 — 2 weeks. Now we're talking about almost two months.
"A record number of MLS players will be included in World Cup squads," the league's official statement reads. "MLS will pause the season after matches on May 24, ahead of FIFA's mandatory player reporting date — May 25 — and will resume play after the conclusion of the international tournament."
Beckham and Messi — Two Icons, One Vision
David Beckham, who elevated MLS to a new level by playing for LA Galaxy in 2007, is now the owner of Inter Miami. His main asset is Lionel Messi, who moved to Miami in 2023 and brought new energy to the league.
Both know what the World Cup means. Beckham led England as captain at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. Messi led Argentina to the title in 2022 — at age 35, in a tournament many believed would be his last. Argentina has since qualified him for one more attempt in 2026.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in North America for the first time across three countries (USA, Canada, Mexico) — and for the first time on American soil since 1994. Beckham and Messi — both made their MLS marks in cities that will host World Cup matches.
MLS has deliberately kept Inter Miami off the immediate post-break weekend (July 16-17) — clearly anticipating that Argentina will go deep in the tournament, and Messi won't yet be back in Miami. Inter Miami's first match after the break is July 22 against Chicago Fire.
6 Rivalry Matches — In the Middle of the World Cup
MLS won't disappear completely. The league has scheduled 6 "marquee rivalry matches" between the World Cup semi-finals and final — four on July 16 (CF Montréal vs. Toronto FC, Chicago Fire vs. Vancouver Whitecaps, St. Louis CITY vs. Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers in the Cascadia derby) and two on July 17 (Nashville SC vs. Atlanta United and the El Tráfico match between LA Galaxy and LAFC). This is the time when many MLS players will already be free, and the league wants the American audience watching the World Cup to remember MLS too.
The World Cup final will be held on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. MLS's regular season returns on July 16 — three days earlier.
Inter Miami's New Stadium
Before the World Cup, Inter Miami has another historic moment ahead. On April 4, the new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, will open with a match against Austin FC.
Currently, the team plays at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale — a temporary location. Miami Freedom Park, near Miami International Airport, is a 25,000-seat stadium designed specifically with Messi's vision in mind.
Beckham's path to building this stadium has been a 12-year saga — from announcing the Miami franchise in 2014, through years of bureaucratic battles, voter referendums, and legal disputes, to the final voter approval of Miami Freedom Park in 2018. Now, in the third full season of the Messi era, everything is finally ready.
The 2027 Revolution
But the 7-week pause is only the beginning. After the 2026 World Cup, MLS will completely change its calendar.
Starting in 2027, the league will transition to a summer-to-spring schedule — just like the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and other top European leagues. This means MLS will align with the global football calendar, which will simplify transfers and international competitions.
For 31 seasons, MLS has operated according to American sports tradition — from February to November. For European clubs, this was always a problem — MLS players were in the wrong phase when the transfer window opened in Europe.
The new calendar fixes this. The transition unfolds in two phases: from February to May 2027, a 14-game "Sprint Season" will bridge the old and new calendars, with its own playoffs and MLS Cup. Then in July 2027, the first true summer-to-spring season (2027-28) kicks off, running through May 2028, with a winter break from mid-December through early February.
Japan's J.League is already on the same path — it begins its first autumn-to-spring season in August 2026, putting it slightly ahead of MLS in the transition. MLS will be the first American league to switch to the European calendar.
