Lamine Yamal scored the winner in Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo, but the moment the ball hit the net, the 18-year-old went down. The diagnosis is now confirmed: a hamstring tear in the biceps femoris of his left leg. His Barcelona season is finished β but the club expect him to be fit for the 2026 World Cup with Spain.
What Happened
On Wednesday, April 22, Barcelona hosted Celta Vigo at Camp Nou. Just before half-time, Yamal won a penalty himself and stepped up to take it. The ball hit the back of the net β 1-0.
But Yamal didn't celebrate. As soon as he struck the ball, he fell to the ground and clutched the back of his left thigh. Medical staff entered the pitch and treated him for several minutes. He couldn't continue β Roony Bardghji came on as his replacement. Yamal limped down the tunnel.
He was not the only Barcelona casualty of the night. Joao Cancelo also went off after taking a blow to his thigh, leaving Hansi Flick to address two injury concerns at once after the final whistle.
What the Club Said
Speaking immediately after the match, before any tests had been conducted, Hansi Flick was cautious: "We'll have to see what happens tomorrow with Lamine. With a clear diagnosis. It's not easy, we have to accept it. Just like Joao. Let's hope they aren't serious injuries."
ESPN journalist Gemma Soler reported that the early indication looked like a torn hamstring β and on Thursday, April 23, Barcelona confirmed it in an official statement:
"Tests have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg (biceps femoris muscle). The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. He will miss the remainder of the league season but is expected to be available for the World Cup."
By Friday, ahead of the trip to Getafe, Flick was more reassuring: "He'll learn from his first muscle injury. He'll surely be ready for the World Cup and will come back stronger." Yamal himself posted on social media: "This injury is keeping me off the pitch just when I wanted to be there the most, and it hurts more than I can put into words."
The Timelines
The recovery window depends on the grade of the tear:
* Grade 1 β 1-3 weeks. He makes the World Cup with time to spare.
* Grade 2 β 4-8 weeks. Could miss the group stage opener but return for the knockout rounds.
* Grade 3 β 3-6 months. The World Cup would be ruled out entirely.
Reports out of Barcelona suggest the realistic timeframe is around four to six weeks, which would line up with Spain's group-stage matches in mid-to-late June. Spain's opening fixture against Cape Verde on June 15 is roughly seven and a half weeks from the injury β possible, but tight.
What Barcelona Lose
Barcelona hold a nine-point lead over Real Madrid in La Liga β the title is essentially in their hands. So at club level, Yamal's absence won't be catastrophic.
But he will miss El ClΓ‘sico on May 10, plus the final five league matches of the season. Barcelona were already eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals by AtlΓ©tico Madrid (3-2 on aggregate), so the European stage is no longer a factor.
What Spain Worry About
This is the more delicate scenario. Yamal is the focal point of the Spanish national team β 6 goals and 11 assists in 25 international appearances. He played a decisive role in winning Euro 2024 as a 16-year-old (he turned 17 on the eve of the final), winning the tournament's Young Player Award. This was supposed to be his first World Cup.
Spain are in Group H:
* Cape Verde β June 15, Atlanta Stadium
* Saudi Arabia β June 21, Atlanta Stadium
* Uruguay β June 26, Guadalajara Stadium (Zapopan, Mexico)
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente will not need to gamble with the opener β Barcelona's official line is that Yamal will be available for the tournament. The question is whether he is at full sharpness for matchday one, or only ready for the second or third group game.
The Season in Numbers
Yamal has scored 24 goals and registered 18 assists in 45 matches across all competitions this season. He is one of the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, having finished second behind Ousmane DembΓ©lΓ© in the 2025 vote. And he is still only 18.
His Barcelona season ends on a treatment table. His World Cup, in all likelihood, does not.
