Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone surgery after injuring his knee in training before the 5-1 win over Bournemouth. Xabi Alonso has warned the 26-year-old England defender may not return until the new year. James made 29 Premier League appearances last season, but injuries have stalled his career once again.
"It's not going to be two or three weeks, it's going to be longer. We'll see before Christmas, after Christmas," Alonso said of the rehabilitation period. He added that Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill will share the captaincy while James is out. The injury also rules James out of England's upcoming games against Croatia and Spain, while Jordan Henderson stole the show for Chelsea against Bournemouth with two goals.
