Manchester United's co-owners INEOS are, for now, sticking with manager Michael Carrick, but are actively considering Eddie Howe as his replacement should results deteriorate. United have failed to keep a clean sheet in five consecutive matches since their League Cup exit, a run that has frustrated the club's hierarchy. The 48-year-old Howe ticks the two key boxes for the decision-makers, with considerable experience of both the Premier League and the Champions League.
During almost five years in charge of Newcastle United, which he left in the summer, Howe led the club with success and delivered the League Cup. Against the backdrop of the current crisis, the coming weeks will be decisive for Carrick, and if United fail to improve, a change in the dugout will become inevitable.
