The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga, the top flights of England, Spain, Italy and Germany, have issued a joint statement against FIFA president Gianni Infantino, demanding a fundamental overhaul of how the organisation is run. The four leagues accused the head of world football's governing body of abusing his power and of attempting to sell the commercial rights to the World Cup to private investors. "Football's longstanding foundations have, in recent years, been threatened by a fundamental governance problem," the leagues declared in their official statement.
At the heart of the dispute is a $20 billion project through which Infantino planned to sell stakes in the World Cup to private entities. Yet despite facing the most serious crisis of his decade in charge, the FIFA president still intends to stand in the 2027 election for a final term running until 2031. Registration for presidential candidates closes on 18 November, with the vote itself set to take place later in Morocco.
