Protests aimed at Manchester City over their 114 financial breaches set the tone at Anfield. Liverpool supporters unfurled banners parodying famous Oasis lyrics, a dig at brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, both well-known City fans. Among the messages in the stands were "Sham Pain Supernova", "& After All, You Really Robbed Us All" and "Look Back in Anger, Shamchester City". On the pitch, however, Enzo Maresca's side gave the hosts no chance in a 3-0 win. Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored, while Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the second half.

Legal experts believe that if the verdict stands on appeal, the Premier League would have the power to strip City of the titles they won. With no such precedent in Premier League history, however, a points deduction this season or a heavy fine is seen as the most realistic sanction. Former City manager Pep Guardiola said he remains loyal to the club despite the verdict.
