Manchester United's hierarchy have identified Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as their main target to replace Michael Carrick following the 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. The 45-year-old Carrick's side have now gone seven matches without a win in the Premier League and Europe and sit in the lower half of the table.

According to The Independent, the 54-year-old Emery led Aston Villa to Europa League glory in May and has won all three of their opening Champions League matches. Change appears inevitable, with former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also among the candidates.
