Tottenham have completed the signing of Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for a club-record fee that could rise to £100 million. The deal is all the more striking given that the London club finished 17th last season, surviving relegation from the Premier League by just two points.
Yet Spurs are attacking the transfer market with real intent. Alongside the 26-year-old Italian, for whom the decision proved straightforward — "People said about there being four or five clubs — there was only one," Tonali admitted — Roberto De Zerbi's side are also strengthening with Matheus Fernandes and other big-money arrivals.
Spending on this scale has been made possible by Tottenham's new stadium, with commercial revenue climbing to £277 million — headroom that allows the club to manoeuvre without breaching SCR rules. And while Tonali thanked Newcastle, where he lifted the Carabao Cup, with an emotional farewell post, his focus is now fixed firmly on London.
The question is whether this astronomical investment can lift a team in crisis back among the elite — or whether a record price tag becomes a burden the player cannot carry.
