Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's all-time leading scorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances, has sensationally walked out of the national team camp and, in a 1,996-word official statement, openly accused Portugal manager Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word. The 41-year-old forward, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, quit the squad in protest before Portugal's UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark, having been left on the bench for all 90 minutes against Norway. According to Ronaldo, on the day of the Norway game one of Jesus's assistants told him the manager wanted to see him, and Jesus then asked whether he was ready to play 30 minutes. It was not part of his physical recovery plan, but he agreed. Yet once sent out to warm up in the second half, the star was never brought on. The captain has since apologised to supporters for not acknowledging them at the final whistle.

Laying bare how the rift deepened, Ronaldo described in detail a meeting held 48 hours later in the presence of Simão Coutinho, sporting director of his Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. Following a video call between Jesus, Coutinho and Tiago Craveiro, a strategic adviser to Ronaldo's company CR7 SA, an eight-point document was even drawn up, setting out the manager's agreement to tell the truth at his press conference and admit his mistake. Instead, Jesus adopted an aggressive stance and ignored the agreed wording. "The coach had broken his word to me," Ronaldo insisted.

Making the situation all the more fraught, Ronaldo had resolved to end his international career after the 2026 World Cup, only to stay on at the request of the Portuguese Football Federation's president, even giving Jesus's appointment his full backing. "I did what I have always said I would do if I did not feel useful: I packed my bags and left," he explained of his unauthorised departure from the camp. Ronaldo now accepts responsibility, refuses to plead mitigating circumstances and expects the federation to impose a mandatory disciplinary sanction, after which he will once again be ready to represent Portugal.
