In the wake of a string of gambling scandals, the NBA and its leading sportsbook partners have agreed to scrap under bets on players expected to play fewer than 12 minutes in a game. A memo sent to operators including DraftKings and FanDuel also rules out wagers on the winner of the opening tip, on players missing specific shots, and parlays combining unders on the same player.

The move was accelerated by the case of Terry Rozier, who played just nine minutes for the Charlotte Hornets in a March 2023 game, citing a foot injury, while his alleged co-conspirators placed more than $200,000 in under bets, most of which paid out. Before that, Jontay Porter was banned from the NBA for life, with an $80,000 parlay linked to his case set to pay out $1.1 million. To protect the integrity of the league, former NFL star and retired FBI agent Charles Tillman will personally lead training sessions for players on the betting rules.
