Charles Leclerc edged Max Verstappen by half a second, but his moment on top came with a problem attached. The Ferrari driver posted a 1:19.075 around the Hungaroring, then came on the radio with an ominous verdict.
"Something broke," Leclerc reported, and he was soon forced to pull up at the entrance to the pit lane.
Elsewhere, Aston Martin rolled out a car carrying a new component. It worked out differently for their two drivers: Lance Stroll lost the rear, spun a full 360 degrees and is thought to have damaged the suspension in the process, while Fernando Alonso completed the session without trouble.
The track itself was chaotic. Verstappen and Carlos Sainz were both summoned to the stewards over dangerous manoeuvres, sharpening an already tense afternoon.
