Lando Norris's Azerbaijan Grand Prix ended on lap 36, when Franco Colapinto triggered a collision that took McLaren's world champion out of the race. Norris now wants the Argentine banned for a race. The Alpine driver locked his brakes into Turn 1 and took out both his own teammate, Pierre Gasly, and Norris. "If you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban," a furious Norris insisted. Speaking to the media, George Russell and Max Verstappen dismissed the demand as over the top.
The stewards stopped short of a ban. They handed Colapinto a 10-second time penalty and a five-place grid drop for the Malaysian Grand Prix. Colapinto did not try to shift the blame. "Just sorry to all the team, not only to Pierre, it was a big mistake," he admitted. Gasly and Colapinto had both been running inside the top 10 before the crash, but Alpine left Baku without a single point from either car.
