Kimi Antonelli has won eight grands prix in the 2026 season, and the 20-year-old now leads his Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 81 points in the championship. Russell drew first blood with victory in Australia, yet Antonelli's eight wins have already surpassed the seven the Briton has collected across his entire career. Engine problems at Spa-Francorchamps and a 30-second deficit to Antonelli in Madrid have badly dented Russell's position. Mercedes, meanwhile, are comfortably clear at the top of the constructors' standings, 145 points ahead of Ferrari.
Team principal Toto Wolff admits the 2026 title is effectively out of Russell's reach. "Of course, there is a psychological side to all of this," Wolff acknowledged. "When you are going through such a difficult season and you keep taking hits, great racing drivers always find the strength to come back. I think George has everything he needs to fight for a championship. Even if that chance has slipped away this year, he will have many more opportunities ahead."
