Backed by a $14 million mega-grant, Charlotte will stage the WTA Finals, the season-ending showpiece of women's tennis, for three years from 2027. The prestigious event will be held at the Spectrum Center, where organisers expect 80,000 spectators across five days. While the 2026 edition will be played in Indian Wells, California, the Women's Tennis Association will officially relocate its global headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Charlotte.
There has never been a more exciting time to build a global championship in women's sport, according to WTA chair Valerie Camillo. Charlotte mayor Rob Harrington, meanwhile, highlighted the city's growing international profile and did not rule out hosting a WTA 500 tournament, the tour's mid-tier category, beyond 2029.
