Terry Rozier's lawyers want the federal case against him thrown out, and their argument comes down to one simple point: nobody hides a bet from the very person who supposedly sold it. The NBA free agent, now 32 and facing serious charges, is accused of taking a $100,000 bribe and faking an injury in the game against the New Orleans Pelicans on 23 March 2023. Prosecutors say Rozier walked off the court on purpose so an underground betting ring could cash in on his deliberately low numbers. Everything shifted, though, once a private message from alleged co-conspirator Deniro Laster surfaced.
Writing to a third party, Laster warned: "Dont tell chum bout the bet" — Chum being Rozier's own nickname. That much is fact. And it is exactly why the defence calls the charge absurd: how can a player be part of a scheme the organisers themselves were keeping from him? The government still lists him among a criminal network of more than 30 people, yet his lawyers insist Rozier always left blood and sweat out on the floor. Now it rests with the court, where a single short text could end up costing him his freedom.
