Julián Álvarez has turned down a contract extension at Atletico Madrid, with the Argentine forward understood to have rejected an offer worth up to €10 million net per season — one of the highest salary proposals in the club's history.
No to an extension
The 26-year-old joined from Manchester City in 2024 for €75 million, with a further €20 million in performance-related bonuses, and remains contracted at the Metropolitano until 2030. His nominal release clause stands at €500 million. The operative figure, however, is considerably lower.
€150 million — or nothing
Atletico are under no immediate pressure to sell. Should a transfer materialise, their valuation is fixed at €150 million — a figure that would represent a club-record sale. Barcelona are the frontrunners, yet their opening position stands at €100 million, with a player exchange also mooted as a means of bridging the shortfall. That €50 million gap will not be straightforward to close, particularly given the Catalan club's obligations under La Liga's strict financial fair play regulations.
Three clubs, one destination
Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have each registered formal interest and possess the financial capacity to compete. Yet Álvarez's own preference is unambiguous: Barcelona, and Barcelona alone. The prospect of Premier League or Ligue 1 football holds no current appeal for him.
Hansi Flick is actively seeking a centre-forward at Camp Nou, and Álvarez — who contributed 20 goals across 49 appearances last season — fits the profile precisely.
Time is running out
Diego Simeone has declined to comment publicly, insisting the decision rests entirely with the player. Atletico, meanwhile, require an answer within weeks — the search for a top-level replacement cannot be deferred indefinitely.
Álvarez is currently on international duty with Argentina ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where the reigning champions will defend their title. Formal negotiations between the clubs have yet to begin.
