According to reports, Japan said it will make a vaccine passport available from next month for Japanese travellers, as governments around the world experiment with ways to relaunch tourism and business trips.
Senior government officials, when questioned whether India would issue vaccine passports, said such passports being issued in these countries is little more than a digital vaccination certificate, “which we already have. It provides vaccination status and link (QR in our case) to root data for verification”. Indians can present a verified vaccine certificate on their mobile phones at present. Meanwhile, over half of the EU member-states have started to issue Covid-19 vaccination passports for travel under the EU’s Digital Covid certificate, which has been established in a bid to restore travel.
In May, a health ministry representative had said WHO had not reached a consensus on the vaccine passport issue for allowing international travel to those fully vaccinated. However, it seems other countries are going ahead on their own.
For now, Indians inoculated with Covaxin will continue to struggle until the vaccine receives approval from WHO.
